People Before Profits; aka the Sad Saga of the Logga

1960: Logger makes a decent, if not easy living.

1970: Logger loses benefits and protections as union is crushed by the forestry corporation with the help of “Open Shop” legislation. Life gets tougher.

1980: Multinational corporation engineers a heavily leveraged buyout with the benefit of tax code changes. “Synergies and cost cutting” result in slashed health care benefits. Logger’s life is a struggle.

1990: Pension plan looted as company is taken private by venture capitalists. Logger has bleak future - retirement is not an option.

2000: All logging jobs relocated to Siberia. Company takes advantage of irrational enthusiasm in real estate market by selling off its land holdings for second homes. Logger, now just a driver for a landscaping company, cannot possible afford said houses, or even his own. Forced to live in his truck.

2007: Federal Government’s “Healthy Forest“ initiative, combined with global warming have killed the forest. $3 per gallon gas makes running the truck prohibatiive. And even if he could, illegal immigrants will always work for less than he can. He can’t afford his meds and the VA Hospital turned him away because it is swamped with Iraq war casualties. Ex-logger drives slowly out of sight…
